Dear Parents
Reading Raffle Launched !
Yesterday we launched our reading incentives to children. The teaching staff have supported the purchase of bundles of prizes, enough to be stored in a large laundry basket. The children were shown these prizes at an early morning assembly.
The bundles include the latest Smiggles attractions, pens, drink containers etc, assorted books, sports gear and I Pods.
Many thanks to Mrs Duigan for purchasing the prizes on the weekend.
How do children win a prize for reading?
The key is to obtain a raffle ticket for a weekly draw from a staff member by reading before school either in the library or the classroom.
If a child is an independent reader at level 30 your teacher will place you in the first draw.
If a child in grade 5 or 6 can read to a smaller child at school for 15 minutes before school then you receive a ticket.
If a child can reach level 30 your teacher will place you in the draw for that week.
If a child can read for 15 minutes before school either in the library or your classroom the teacher will place you in the draw.
If a child can read at home, then homework log books signed by parents will be accepted as proof of reading.
All teachers have raffle books.
Reading is an essential journey in primary school, we all need to be involved! Our goal is to get children reading to independence. An independent reader finishing primary school has a solid foundation for secondary school. Reading should start at home with regular sessions. Reading is also encouraged and supported and taught in all our classes. It is the foundation of literacy skills and the backbone of the curriculum.
The reading raffle as well as the Mutli Lit reading tuition program are both being coordinated by our Leaning Support Teacher, Miss Cathrine Montgomery. The Multi Lit reading program involves the formal training of teacher assistants and parents to support reading tuition in the school.
P&F Barbecue
Last Friday we had a successful P&F barbecue with associated open classrooms.
The P&F executive were delighted in the overall numbers, particularly the many new families.
A feature of the evening was the friendly and inviting atmosphere the P&F and teachers helped create over the evening meal, the friendly chatting and the odd game of soccer on the oval.
Swimming
We are proud of our swimmers who have trained consistently for five sessions in preparation for the Catholic Carnival on Friday. Many thanks to the staff Ms Braz and Mr McCormack for their early morning support both with instruction and transport. Many thanks to our parents who encouraged our children and to Mr Joe Hodge who supported me with the Grade 5 and 6 children.
I’m looking forward to the Carnival already.

I will be absent from school on Wednesday and Thursday attending a National Literacy and Numeracy Pilot Forum in Canberra as part of our involvement in the Action Maths Research Program. Ms Jo Jordan APT&L will be in charge of the school.

Harmony Day 2010
Everyone belongs -
What's Harmony Day All About?
Harmony Day is celebrated on 21 March each year.
Managed by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC), Harmony Day celebrates the cohesive and inclusive nature of our nation and promotes the benefits of cultural diversity.
The continuing message of Harmony Day is ‘Everyone Belongs’. It's about community participation, inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone. Many City Councils host a ‘Harmony Day Welcome’ for International, Migrant and Humanitarian Entrant Students.
The 2010 theme is ‘Express Yourself’. This gives people the opportunity to share with others the importance of diversity in their workplace, school and community through action, performance, fashion and food.
Since Harmony Day began in 1999 thousands of schools, community groups and organisations across Australia have hosted Harmony Day events.
This year St. Therese’s school will be participating in Harmony Day. The students will be learning about our diverse community through classroom lessons on Monday 22nd March. We look forward to learning about our immediate school community and the wider community on this day and we encourage any family who would like to be involved in sharing their cultural diversity with a class to contact their child’s teacher or Mrs Cochrane.
MULTILIT TRAINING:
Information went home in last week’s newsletter regarding a new reading program to aide those students who are struggling in reading. On Monday 29th March parents are welcome to attend a workshop about Multilit. This session will be led by Anne Charles from the Catholic Education Office. The session will begin at1.30pm and conclude at 3.00pm. Any parents interested in teaching children reading skills are welcome to attend. The program may be useful to use with your own child who is having difficulty with reading or you may wish to volunteer in the school and help a student who is having difficulties.
Please complete the form at the end of the newsletter if you are interested in attending and return to the office by tomorrow.
